The articles over the last two weeks about the situation that Jews in Europe are facing are generally very good. However, there are two salient points that appears to have not been mentioned.
Europe offers lifetime employment, strong labor protections and a comprehensive social safety net. The U.S. and Israel have employment at will, fewer social services and a stronger emphasis on taking personal responsibility for one’s success. This may not be a big concern for the religious and/or strongly Zionistic. However, many secular, assimilated European Jews would probably rather not put themselves in a precarious job and living situation by leaving.
European leaders claimed their countries would be missing something if several thousands Jews leave. Yet, this has not been reflected in their behavior towards Israel and Jews. Rather, these leaders are likely worried about a mass exodus of taxpayers.
