In the June 3 Editorial, “Promoting Disunity,” the editor calls out JCC Watch for “confus[ing] the public,” when it comes to the role UJA-Federation of New York plays in the Jewish Communal Fund’s grant allocation. Perhaps JCC Watch is using the commonly employed method of conveniently leaving out details to make its point more clearly in a short amount of space. The editor explains the JCF granting process and writes, “JCC Watch knows all that but prefers to confuse the public.”
This is a similar practice to the way the editor simply dismisses JCC Watch’s criticism with one sentence, “[T] he progressive New Israel Fund, which advocates for equality among all Israelis…”
The editor knows that the New Israel Fund and its grantees do much more than simply advocate for equality among all Israelis. For example, it fought the Israel boycott law and recently held an event to promote the efforts “to hold Israel more accountable for Gaza.” This followed a report by its grantee, Breaking the Silence, which accused Israel of wantonly killing Palestinians. But The Jewish Week prefers to confuse the public.
