I would like to congratulate Dr. Edward Halperin on his excellent opinion essay, “Jewish Hospitals Are Becoming Extinct” (Oct. 8), on the origin and disappearance of many Jewish hospitals. However, citing the change of name of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (NS-LIJHS) to Northwell Health System as an example of a Jewish hospital becoming extinct is inaccurate.
The NS-LIJHS is the corporate name of a health system, not a hospital. The name of the 48-acre Long Island Jewish medical center campus — consisting of the Long Island Jewish Hospital, the Zucker-Hillside hospital, the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, the Katz Women’s hospital, the Zuckerberg Pavilion and the Phyllis and William Mack Emergency Center (all clearly identifiable well-known Jewish names) – remains unchanged.
Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on rebuilding the campus at LIJ. The founding fathers would have been proud of the growth and development of the LIJ campus which continues unchanged to be known as Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Hospital. The change of the system name is corporate, the name of the hospital, true to its founders, proudly remains Long Island Jewish Hospital.
