In his article, “Is Your Rabbinate Priestly Or Prophetic?” (March 21), Jonathan Mark makes a somewhat misleading historical reference to “the Reform movement’s American Council for Judaism. He is implying that the anti-Zionist ACJ was an official arm of the Union for Reform Judaism. This was not the case.
The ACJ is better described as an “offshoot” of the Reform movement.
As Michael A. Meyer states in “Response to Modernity: A History of the Reform Movement in Judaism,” “Once there was a State of Israel, virtually every Reform Jew — if not a Zionist in the fullest sense — at least became its friend and supporter.”
