Important Changes Affecting Health Care Planning
By: Angela Siegel, J.D., LL.M.
For many years, purchasing long-term health care insurance was seen as the perfect way to pay for health care needs in one’s later years. Unfortunately, over the last few years, many companies have stopped offering long-term care insurance, and the premiums on the ones which are being sold are exorbitant.
What is the solution to the foregoing? The creation of an irrevocable medicaid trust is becoming a much more recognized way of protecting your assets in the event you should ever need long-term health care. One must establish the trust at least five (5) years in advance of needing care, so it is important to consider it a necessary planning tool at a young age. Starting the planning between the ages of 65 and 70 is considered ideal. Transferring your residence into a medicaid trust really has few, if any, disadvantages, as one is not giving up much in the way of control. The trust can be drafted to provide you with the right to reside in the property for the rest of your life and to direct the trustees to sell the property and purchase a replacement residence or invest the sales proceeds, paying you all of the income generated on the investment. A medicaid trust can also protect one’s liquid assets, although the control one can retain with respect to liquid assets is more limited. The trust can provide that you receive all of the income and dividends generated by the assets, but it can not allow you to directly access the principal of the trust.

Seven Ways to Live Longer and Be Healthier

From Brookdale Senior Living
Genetics, environment and lifestyle are all variables when studying longevity. And there isn’t any one secret to living a long, happy life. Here are a few things you can start incorporating into your life today:
Stay positive
PATL stands for “Positive Attitude Towards Life” and is a measurement tool used in several studies on longevity. The term encompasses everything from laughter and optimism to relaxed behavior and extroversion and is attributed to a large number of centenarians.
In other words, people with positive attitudes tend to live longer, so kick back and enjoy life.
Exercise often
No, you don’t need to spend hours in the gym or train for marathons. Make sure your routine includes easy-going exercise on a daily basis. You will likely be healthier and, in turn, could live longer.
Playing games can also improve longevity. When you swing that badminton racket, you’re not just working up a sweat — you’re having a good time and making new friends.
Eat right
Stick to these five rules:
• Drink alcohol, but only one to two glasses a day
• Eat until you’re almost full but not tired
Support the New York Jewish Week
Our nonprofit newsroom depends on readers like you. Make a donation now to support independent Jewish journalism in New York.
• Eat your smallest meal in the evenings
• Eat mostly veggies and beans
• Eat three to four ounces of meat five times a month
Do good
Volunteer. And do it often. Not only will you be exercising, helping others and making new relationships, you’ll inadvertently increase your life expectancy. And if you’re volunteering for purely altruistic reasons, your chances of joining the centenarian club increases significantly.
Join a community
Human connection is imperative to your well-being. Belonging to a community can make you a healthier person who is bound to live a lot longer. Some doctors say that it is the single most important factor when it comes to longevity.
Forget worry
Meditation and prayer are known links to longevity. It’s no surprise that taking time out the day for some deep breaths and reflection can increase life expectancy.
Studies indicate that when high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, are released into the body, it can weaken the immune system and even create heart problems. Stay calm, and practice that “om”.
Enjoy yourself
Though this secret is close to the first one, it encompasses a different set of values. It’s really about treating yourself. It’s okay to get a massage or eat a second cookie. What’s important is to live as though every day is a remarkable one and to approach every experience with an open mind.

DOROT
In 1976, DOROT’s founders, Columbia University students, set out to meet the needs of their senior neighbors who were hungry for both food and social connection. They were pioneers in their approach to serving their older neighbors, with the ultimate goal of alleviating social isolation.
From these beginnings arose a multi-service agency mobilizing thousands of volunteers of all ages and offering numerous services committed to alleviating social isolation among older adults. Our programs, which engage 10,000 seniors and volunteers annually, bring critical resources to vulnerable older adults by offering services specific to their needs and interests. In addition to our hallmark Friendly Visiting program, seniors benefit from home delivered meals; an annual cycle of volunteer visits with special food package deliveries; a Door to Door program to assist frail New Yorkers on medical and other essential appointments; and University Without Walls, a learning and support community linking homebound students throughout the nation via teleconference. This program offers more than 100 classes annually on a variety of cultural, historical and relevant topics enabling seniors to stay connected from their homes.
Forty years later, DOROT’s innovation and expertise continues to improve the lives and health of older adults. DOROT serves older adults in Manhattan from 59th to 125th streets on the West Side and from 14th to 96th streets on the East Side. Additionally, we provide services to seniors in Westchester County.

Talking to Your Parent about Assisted Living
As we get older, many of us are cast in the role of caretaker to a parent or other aging loved one. Whether they need a little or a lot of help, there may come a time that moving to an assisted living community is considered. But why is it so difficult to talk about?
Assisted living isn’t the same as a nursing home. These communities offer freedom from daily chores and worries, daily activities, socialization and meals, along with some support if the resident should need it. They include apartment-style living, and at Gurwin’s Assisted Living community, residents enjoy the privacy and independence that having a full apartment brings.
The best course of action is to have the conversation before a time of crisis. This will allow everyone to adjust to the idea and have a more active role in the decision process. Speak in private and listen to your elder. Understanding someone’s feelings can help them to be open to the advantages any change can bring. Remember to choose your words carefully – and show enthusiasm about helping them move into their new home.
By addressing any misconceptions and fears up front, often the parents are in agreement to making the move and excited about starting a new chapter in their lives. They understand that they are gaining so much and losing very little.

Parker Jewish Institute Holds 2019 Annual Senior Olympics
The event challenges patients and residents to keep up their physical and mental health through planned socialization and friendly competition
New Hyde Park, NY, July 8, 2019 – Parker Jewish Institute hosted the 2019 Annual Senior Olympics for patients and residents on June 18. The event featured an afternoon of spirited activities, followed by a festive summer barbeque.
Each year, the Senior Olympics challenge members of the Parker community to keep up their physical and emotional health through planned socialization and friendly competition. While the older athletes enjoy the chance to follow their youthful interests, most residents have fun helping their teams win.
After the annual lighting of the torch at this year’s games, participants took part in a modified wheelchair race, a beanbag toss and other relays. Age and disability presented no obstacles.
“The Senior Olympics is one of the highlights of our kickoff to summer themed activities, not only do the residents and patients look forward to it, but the families and staff members do as well,” said Michael N. Rosenblut, Parker’s president and CEO.
The annual games are made possible by Ben Dickstein, the great-grandson of the late Jack Parker.

Sinai’s two chapels accommodate services large and small. Our state-of-the-art broadcasting system can televise the live service in a room adjacent to the Chapel on 50” high-definition televisions.
Sinai now offers a password protected live Internet broadcast of the service, for family unable to travel. In addition, Sinai offers DVD and audio CD reproduction of the service.
Whether Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox, Sinai provides services that are ceremonially correct, appropriate and dignified. Sinai also offers families the choice of traditional or non-traditional services.

Some families choose to have a service at an alternative location such as a gravesite, synagogue, or other place of significance to the family. Since there are so many details to manage in planning a service, most families choose to have Sinai’s staff of trained professionals coordinate such ceremonies.
Making funeral arrangements in advance protects families from unexpected expense and spares them the burden of making complex choices at a most difficult time. Sinai’s staff of experienced pre-planning advisors can meet with you privately at the Chapel or in the comfort of your home, with no cost or obligation. All Sinai pre-plans are FDIC insured.
Sinai Memorials specializes in crafting and customizing monuments to match the needs and wishes of every family. Our staff of specialists, technical and Rabbinic, invest great time and effort to insure that you will receive the finest monument possible.
Sinai Chapels and the Resnick family are proud sponsors of leading Jewish Community Organizations such as: the Queens College Center for Jewish Studies; Kupferberg Holocaust Center and Archives at Queens Community College; and the United Jewish Appeal.
