In a wide ranging public discussion held June 4 on Zoom, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman spoke with Jewish Week editor-in-chief Andrew Silow-Carroll about the coronavirus pandemic, the global forces leaving societies vulnerable to crisis, and the situation in Israel.
In tying together these and other hot topics – including global warming and unchecked capitalism – Friedman noted how the unrest in his hometown of Minneapolis took the world by surprise. “You will never see the spark coming,” said Friedman. “But when the spark comes and that fire gets lit, putting out that fire can be absolutely humbling.”
The Jewish Week conversation, in which 3,000 people took part, was presented with UJA Federation of New York, and featured introductions by Jewish Week board president Kai Falkenberg and Eric Goldstein, CEO of UJA-Federation.
