SYDNEY (JTA) — An injured Israeli tourist in New Zealand was rescued after falling in an area of steep ice and snow.

The man was extracted on Thursday afternoon from the area in Arthur’s Pass on South Island. He was among three Israeli men who were attempting to traverse the area that morning. It is believed he slid about 100 feet onto rocks and sustained a broken femur and moderate head injuries.

Two medics stayed with the injured man, according to New Zealand Police, and a second helicopter arrived on the scene with members of the Christchurch Alpine Cliff Rescue team.

The two other Israelis were taken to Arthur’s Pass. One was able to make it back to Goat Pass hut, where the men had spent the night, and radio for help.

Search coordinator Sgt. Sean Judd of the New Zealand Police said the group was not well prepared for the conditions on the mountain.
