JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israel Defense Forces struck a Hamas target in the southern Gaza Strip with tank fire.

The attack early on Sunday morning was in response to a bomb placed near the border fence between Israel and Gaza, the IDF said in a statement.

Three Gazans were killed in the attack, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Al-Quds Brigades, the military arm of the Islamic Jihad terror group, vowed revenge.  “We will not relent in our duty towards the blood of those killed and know how we’ll react to this serious escalation,” the group said in a statement.

Hours earlier, Israel’s Air Force attacked a Hamas training base in southern Gaza in response to an incident on Saturday night, when four Gazan Palestinians crossed into Israel and threw a firebomb at Israeli troops before retreating back into Gaza.

More than 10,000 Gazan Palestinians demonstrated at the border between Israel and Gaza over the weekend. Israeli troops “responded with riot dispersal methods and fire in accordance with standard operating procedures,” the IDF said in a statement.
