Sept. 8: A cantorial jam with Jack Mendelson, Daniel Mendelson and pianist Anthony Coleman. Put together two of the area’s most striking and individual cantorial voices and give them a jazz pianist steeped in the Jewish musical traditions and the result should be sublime. The Museum at Eldridge Street (12 Eldridge St.), 7 p.m.
Sept. 11: Composer Martin Bresnick birthday concert. Krakauer isn’t the only Jewish musical luminary celebrating a milestone this year. Composer Bresnick turns 70 and there will be two events to mark the occasion, recitals of his music at the Noguchi Museum (9-01 33rd Road, Queens) at 3 p.m. on 9/11 and at National Sawdust (80 N. Sixth St., Brooklyn) on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
Sept. 12: Muzikas, the outstanding Hungarian folk group, makes one of its infrequent visits to the United States, performing at the Abrons Arts Center (466 Grand St.) at 7 p.m.
Sept. 15: Steve Reich celebrates his 80th birthday. Ensemble Signal, a formidable new music group, will perform New York premieres of new versions of the “Daniel Variations” and “You Are (Variations)” at the Miller Theater at Columbia University, 8 p.m. At the end of the month, ECM will release a new multiple CD set of Reich compositions. (And there will be dozens of other performances of Reich’s music around town throughout the autumn.)
Sept. 21: Jazz pianist Aaron Diehl makes his New York Philharmonic debut with George Gershwin’s Concerto in F as the highlight of the orchestra’s season-opening concert. David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 25: The Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus celebrates Shalem Aleichem musically with a repeat of its acclaimed concert “To Life, To Laugh, L’Chaim!” Merkin Concert Hall (129 W. 67th St.), 4:30 p.m.
Oct. 16: Guitarist Gary Lucas brings back his musical/cinematic tribute to the Fleischer Brothers, “Fleischerei,” with post-modern jazz mama Tamar Korn, City Winery (155 Varick St.), 11 a.m.
October 29: Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi pay a musical tribute to Marc Chagall that includes excerpts from Strom’s work-in-progress biography of the great painter. B’nai Jeshurun (257 W. 88th St.), 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 1, Nov. 3: A celebration of three generations of musical theater royalty, Rodgers, Rodgers and Guettel, with the New York Festival of Song performing songs by Richard Rodgers, Mary Rodgers (his daughter) and Adam Guettel (his grandson). Merkin Concert Hall (129 W. 67th St.), both nights at 8 p.m.
Nov. 15-20: Jon Madof does a week’s residency at The Stone (Second Street and Avenue C), including a performance by his rocking, mesmeric Afrobeat/Carlebach aggregation, Zion80.
Ongoing: The New York Klezmer Series has another relatively new home, this time landing in Brooklyn at the Jalopy Theater and School of Music (315 Columbia St.) on Thursday nights. The series kicks off Sept. 8 with a fabulous double-bill of Frank London and Eleanor Reissa. Each evening begins with an instrumental klezmer workshop at 6:30 p.m., followed by a concert at 8:30 and a jam session at 10.
