RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — An Israeli tourist was killed in a traffic accident on the Colombian coral island of San Andreas in the Caribbean.

Ohad Menshahoff, 23, of Ashkelon, was riding a rented motorcycle with friends when they were struck and killed by a car traveling at high speed on the dangerous San Luis Highway on Tuesday night. Menshahoff had just arrived on the island, registered at an inn and went off for a ride, the El Extra news portal reported.

Medical aid reportedly took a long time to arrive. Menshahoff was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead. Members of the local Jewish community came to the hospital. Israel’s consul general in Bogota, Yuval Sharabi, notified the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which informed the family.

San Andres, which is thought to be part of Colombia, is located closer to the coast of Nicaragua in Central America than to the continental Colombian mainland. Full of outer cays, reefs, atolls and sand banks, the island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
