JERUSALEM (JTA) — A rocket fired from Gaza landed near Ashkelon in southern Israel.
No damage or injuries were reported. Code red sirens sounded in several communities near the Gaza border after 2 a.m. Thursday, sending residents running for bomb shelters. Residents of the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council reported hearing an explosion when the rocket landed.
In retaliation, Israel Air Force jets fired on what the Israel Defense Forces called in a statement a “terror infrastructure” in central Gaza.
The IDF said it holds Hamas responsible for rocket attacks emanating from Gaza.
“The repeated rocket fire at Israel does not only put the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians at risk but it is a deliberate decision to target civilians,” the IDF spokesman, Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, said. “No person should live under the threat of terrorism, always fearing what will come next, and whether they will find shelter in time to save their lives.”
