(JTA) — The FBI has arrested and charged three Brooklyn residents from the former Soviet Union with providing material support to ISIS.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Department of Justice, one of the suspects was arrested on Wednesday morning while attempting to board a flight to Istanbul at Kennedy Airport in New York, allegedly with the intention of traveling to Syria to join ISIS. Another had purchased a ticket to Turkey and allegedly was planning to make a similar journey next month.
The three men arrested were Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev, 24; Akhror Saidakhmetov, 19; and Abror Habibov, 30. Juraboev and Habibov are citizens of Uzbekistan, while Saidakhmetov is a citizen of Kazakhstan.
According to the complaint filed, two of the men also discussed domestic attacks, with one communicating to an ISIS contact his willingness to kill President Barack Obama and another suggesting that if he could not travel to Syria, he would instead attack and kill members of the police and the FBI.
The suspects face prison sentences of up to 15 years.
