One person was notably absent from the “In Memoriam” segment at the Oscars last night: Joan Rivers.
Though Robin Williams, Mickey Rooney, Lauren Bacall, James Garner, Ruby Dee, Mike Nichols, and Maya Angelou were all honored in this year's segment, Rivers, who died in September at age 81, was notably absent.
According to her IMDB page, Rivers boasts 38 acting credits to her name in a career that spans 63 years. She had roles in "Space Balls," "Iron Man 3," voiced a character in "Shrek 2," directed Billy Crystal's big screen debut in 1978's "Rabbit Test," and was the subject of 2010 documentary "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work."
Rivers also ruled the red carpet, coining the phrase "Who are you wearing?" and hosted E!'s "Fashion Police" until her death.
Fans took to Twitter en masse responding to the snub. Some threatened to boycott the Oscars because of the slight.
Asked about Rivers' absence, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that oversees the Academy Awards, issued a statement today:
"Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the In Memoriam segment of this year's Oscar show. She is, however, included in our In Memoriam gallery on Oscar.com."
