Why Bother To Read?

In his Opinion piece about the need for Jewish organizations to support Jewish
journalism, David Suissa claims that young Jews no longer attracted to
ritual Judaism could become connected through reading Jewish
newspapers (“Why Judaism Needs Journalism,” Jan. 2).

He claims that growing up in Morocco he participated in going to
synagogue and other rituals that kept him attached to his faith. He fails to
ask the question if young American Jews are so disconnected to the faith of
their ancestors, why would they gravitate to reading a Jewish newspaper?

What
has sustained Judaism is Jewish learning and rituals. It is also what binds
us to our past. I would suggest that outreach — such as Chabad and the many
other Jewish organizations like it — is the only hope we have.
