JERUSALEM (JTA) — Shots were fired from Gaza at an Israeli military jeep on patrol near the security fence on the border with the coastal strip.
An Israeli tank retaliated, firing a shell into Gaza on Thursday afternoon, the Israel Defense Forces said. It is the first time that Israel has fired artillery into Gaza since the end of its 50-day operation there over the summer, Haaretz reported.
The unarmored patrol jeep that the soldiers were riding in was damaged in the attack. No soldiers were injured.
A Palestinian who approached the security fence was shot and killed by IDF troops earlier in the week, according to Palestinian reports.
