JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel fired on a Gaza girls school sheltering about 1,000 displaced Gazans with a U.N. relief agency team in the building, the agency said.
The school in Maghazi, in central Gaza, came under fire Tuesday while the United Nations Relief and Works Agency unit was inspecting damage from shelling the previous day, the French news agency AFP reported.
Israel had cleared the visit by UNRWA, which runs the school and was trying to determine which side in the Israel-Gaza conflict caused the damage, according to AFP.
The school was evacuated and UNRWA filed a formal complaint with Israel over the shelling.
The Israeli military had not commented on the shelling as of early Wednesday afternoon.
As of Tuesday evening, there reportedly were some 102,788 displaced Gaza Palestinians seeking shelter in UNRWA buildings throughout the coastal strip, including schools.
Also Tuesday, rockets were found in an empty UNRWA school for the second time in less than a week.
