West Bank prof named P.A. prime minister

The president of a West Bank Palestinian university has been tapped to form a new Palestinian Authority government and become prime minister.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The president of a West Bank Palestinian university was  tapped to form a new Palestinian Authority government and become prime minister.

The appointment of Rami Hamdallah, president of an-Najah National University in Nablus, by P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas was announced Sunday.

Hamdallah has three weeks to form a government.

He succeeds Salam Fayyad, who resigned in mid-April but remained to lead a caretaker government until a new government was formed.
