VANCOUVER, Canada (JTA) — A Winnipeg teenager was convicted on charges of assault with a weapon in a racially motivated attack on a Jewish student.

The 17-year-old attacker, a high school student whose anonymity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday and will be sentenced June 27, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.

He attempted to burn the hair of a 15-year-old female Jewish classmate with a lighter at his school last November. The girl suffered no serious injuries in the attack.

A school official said the attack was accompanied by racial comments. Law enforcement officials in Manitoba considered but decided against pressing hate crime charges, according to the Winnipeg Free Press.
