(JTA) — Israeli troops reportedly killed a Palestinian and injured several more along the border fence with Gaza.
The killing, reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry and news agencies, came less than 48 hours after a truce went into effect, bringing to a close more than a week of escalating violence between Israeli forces and Hamas, the controlling power in Gaza.
Except for Friday’s skirmish, the truce appeared to be holding.
Scores of Palestinians flocked to the fence on Friday, apparently in the belief that the once-forbidden border zone was now open to them, The New York Times reported.
The Israeli military said it fired warning shots to move people back from the border area. According to reports, Hamas officials worked to clear the border area following the shooting.
