As Iran's leader settled into his accomodations at the Warwick Hotel in Manhattan, New York Post reporters on Sunday night were trying to make a basket case out of him.
The Post compiled a swag-bag filled with Jewish-themed goodies for the man who wants to point a nuclear missile at Jerusalem, and for good measure threw in a brochure for the Musuem of Jewish Heritage-Living Memorial to the Holocaust here, just in case Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to address his doubts about the Shoah.
"The anti-Semite’s special welcome basket — from New Yorkers with love — included such locally procured goodies as Gold’s Borscht, Manischewitz Gefilte Fish and smoked whitefish from the world-famous Murray’s Sturgeon House on the Upper West Side," wrote Cynthia R. Fagen and Kevin Fasick.
That's not all: The Tehranian tough-guy could have also had a free ticket to the off-Broadway smash "Old Jews Telling Jokes," in case he wanted to bring some knee-slappers back to the Ayatollahs.
Could have, if he accepted the basket. Guards told the Post scribes to take a hike and take the kosher goodies with them.
In other responses to Ahmadinejad's visit to address the U.N. General Assembly Wednesday, an Israeli group that represents terror victims is trying to sue the Warwick for the cost of the hotel stay, since Iran has been found by a U.S. court to have supported terror against Americans. Also, a group of politicians and Jewish leaders held their annual "Go Home Ahmadinejad" rally near the U.N.
In perhaps his most famous escapade, Ahmadinejad spoke at Columbia University five years ago this week, only to be raked over the coals by university president Lee Bollinger and made headlines by declaring there are no gays in his country.
By the way, Posties, if you still have that gift basket … well we'd hate to see it go to waste.
