NEW YORK (JTA) — Jews in Ocean Township, N.J., buried a 12-year-old boy, Ezra Cornman, who died a day after a sand tunnel he was digging on a beach collapsed on him.
The boy was visiting the beach in Long Branch, N.J., on Tuesday afternoon when he was buried by sand in the 2- to 3-foot hole in which he was playing, according to police.
Lifeguards on duty removed Cornman from the sand immediately and rushed him to the hospital; he died the next day.
The funeral took place Thursday at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapel in Ocean Township. Cornman was the fifth of seven children of Steven and Elizabeth Cornman, who live in Ocean Township during the summer, according to the Asbury Park Press.
