WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Washington Nationals chose Max Ungar of the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Maryland in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball draft.
Ungar, 17, who recently graduated from the school, was a catcher for the Lions. The Smith campus in Rockville is named for the Nationals’ owners, Theodore and Annette Lerner.
Another Jewish player — Max Fried, 18, of suburban Los Angeles — was drafted Monday in the first round by the San Diego Padres. The 6-foot-4 lefty pitcher, the draft’s seventh overall pick, had committed to attending UCLA.
