NEW YORK (JTA) — International nuclear inspectors found evidence of Iran’s highest level yet of enriched uranium.
The IAEA found traces of uranium enriched to up to 27 percent in an underground bunker at Iran’s Fordo enrichment plant, IAEA diplomats told The Associated Press last Friday.
Iran began enriching to 20 percent last year. A 90 percent enrichment level is needed for a nuclear weapon.
The diplomats stressed that the latest finding did not necessarily indicate a covert weapons grade enrichment project. One alternative explanation, they told the AP, was that the centrifuges used to enrich uranium could have been over-enriching at the beginning as the technicians adjusted them.
