According to Us Weekly, sources close to Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg say that the three will depart “Saturday Night Live” at the end of the season to pursue movie careers. Wiig and Sudeikis have already established themselves as big screen lead actors (Wiig in “Bridesmaids” and Sudeikis in “Horrible Bosses”), wheres Samberg had mostly supporting roles (except “Hot Rod” in 2007) until this year as his film “That’s My Boy,” where he plays Adam Sandler’s son, is released this summer.
Samberg joined SNL in 2005 as part of the comedy trio The Lonely Island, together with Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. The three wrote for the show and made famous with SNL Digital Shorts such as “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box” (with Justin Timberlake), “I’m On a Boat” (with T-Pain) and more. His SNL characters are mostly random, though he has done Prince William and Rahm Emanuel several times.
So far there is no response from Wiig, Sudeikis and Samberg but if it’s true, SNL just lost a lot of its funny.
Here’s “I’m on a Boat,” just for the laughs:
