The “Paranormal Activity” trilogy, three of the most profitable horror films in history, made Oren Peli a true horror icon. Now, Peli is deserting the low-budget home video flicks for something a little different: the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
In his new movie, “Chernobyl Diaries,” the trailer for which was released a few days ago, four friends decide to explore the disaster-struck town and discover the deserted area is not exactly deserted.
Peli, who wrote the screenplay, is an Israeli-born filmmaker who relocated to the U.S. at age 19. His first film, “Paranormal Activity,” with a budget of just $15,000, grossed over $193 million at the box office. The following two were just as successful. Peli is also the co-creator of the ABC show “The River,” and currently has three other films in production: the fourth “Paranormal Activity” and a film about “Area 51.”
“Chernobyl Diaries,” directed by Bradley Parker (Fight Club) and starring, per usual, pretty anonymous actors, will be released May 25.
