NEW YORK (JTA) – An Iranian newspaper called for retaliation against Israel following the killing of a nuclear scientist.

“Israeli military chief Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz in his recent remarks spoke about damaging Iran’s nuclear program,” Hossein Shariatmadari, the chief editor of the Kayhan newspaper, wrote in a column Thursday, according to news agencies. “Assassinations of Israeli military and officials are easily possible.”

The column followed the death in a car bomb on Wednesday of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, who worked at the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed both Israel and the U.S. for Roshan’s death, but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton denied any U.S. involvement. President Obama has condemned the attack that killed Roshan.

Israel has not commented on the killing.
