If Iran succeeds in developing a nuclear weapon, the United States will "have failed in what could be our generation’s greatest test," according to Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), who’s gearing up to deliver a major policy address on Iran later this morning.

An advance copy of Kirk’s remarks were provided to me.

"Today, the Islamic Republic of Iran is on the march to nuclear weapons," Kirk will say, according to the remarks. "And if this brutal, terrorist-sponsoring regime achieves its goal — if Iran gets the bomb — we, the United States of America and freedom-loving nations around the world… will have failed in what could be our generation’s greatest test."

Armed with nukes, Iran will be "far more dangerous and unpredictable than the Soviet Union ever was," Kirk will state at an American Enterprise Institute forum to be held later today in the Capitol Visitors Center.

"An Iran with nuclear weapons will be far more dangerous and unpredictable than the Soviet Union ever was – with far greater potential for a 21st century Cold War to turn red hot within minutes," he will say in remarks titled, “If Iran Gets the Bomb.” "If Iran gets the bomb, its reign of terror will know no bounds, its brutality will know no end, and its threat to U.S. interests will know no limit."
