In advance of the release of his new film, The Adventure of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, director Steven Spielberg spoke to Empire Magazine about his latest effort and provided some insight into the making of his much-maligned previous movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
“George is in charge of breaking the stories,” Spielberg explained, passing the buck onto Lucas. “He’s done it on all four movies. Whether I like the stories or not, George has broken all the stories. He is working on Indy V. We haven’t gone to screenplay yet, but he’s working on the story. I’ll leave it to George to come up with a good story.”
So did Spielberg like the story Lucas came up with? While he says that he did like Indiana Jones 4, it wouldn’t matter to him if he didn’t. “I am loyal to my best friend,” Spielberg said. “When he writes a story he believes in – even if I don’t believe in it – I’m going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it.”
Let’s hope that Lucas does a better job envisaging Indiana Jones 5 because it doesn’t seem that Spielberg will do much to improve it.
