ATHENS, Greece (JTA) — One hundred Israeli journalists arrived in Salonika, Greece for the annual meeting of the Tel Aviv-based Israel Press Association.
The journalists will visit the many Jewish sites around the city and will meet with the leadership of the Salonika Jewish community.
The tour was organized by the Salonika tourism office. Its managing director, Nikos Sapountzakis, said that the visit by the Israeli journalists shows "in the best way that Salonika is a destination for Israelis, taking into consideration the bond between the city and its Jewish element."
Salonika, once known as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans," was home to a thriving Sephardic Jewish community of approximately 50,000 before World War II. Virtually all of the city’s Jews perished in Nazi extermination camps.
