(JTA) — Thousands of Chabad-Lubavitch camps, schools and synagogues marked 70 years since Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson and his wife arrived in the United States from Nazi-occupied France.
The seventh Lubavitcher rebbe, who died in 1994 and who has been without a successor, arrived in the United States with his wife, Chaya Mushka, on the 28th day of the Jewish month of Sivan, which fell this year on June 30.
Many Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries around the world pledged new resolutions for the coming year around the number 70, for example attracting 70 new children to their religious schools and opening 70 new Lubavitch-Chabad institutions in the United States.
Upon his arrival to the United States, Schneerson was charged by his father-in-law and predecessor, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, to begin the educational, social services and publishing arms of the movement, setting into motion what many call “the Rebbe’s revolution” that helped shape modern Jewry.
