TEL AVIV (JTA) — Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America kicked off its centennial celebrations with a reception at a Tel Aviv skyscraper built on the site of what once was a Hadassah hospital.
Among the high-profile guests at Tuesday’s event was U.S. Ambassador to Israel James Cunningham, who commended Hadassah’s members for coming together to create one of Israel’s premier medical centers.
"You should be congratulated," he said.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat described going to Hadassah first as a mischievous boy with the occasional broken arm, then as a wounded soldier, and most recently after a car accident. He described the mix of patients and staff — Jewish, Arab, secular and religious — as a "hub of sanity."
