The Opinion column, “A Call For A Moratorium On Shabbat Weddings” (Aug. 27) by Rabbi Leon Morris was quite misguided. While it is true that two Jews should not get married on Shabbat, the far greater problem for our community is that of intermarriage, which Rabbi Morris ignores in his article.
With a worldwide Jewish population of 12 million to 13 million, no rabbi with an ounce of self-respect should participate in a wedding of a Jew and a non-Jew. Such ceremonies are often performed to mitigate the guilt of the Jew, who knows that this is a union he or she should not enter. Somehow, having a rabbi present gives it an illusion of being more acceptable to them and their families. If no rabbis would participate, Jews might think twice about pursuing such a marriage.
