NEW YORK (JTA) — JTA won two first-place prizes in the annual journalism contest sponsored by the American Jewish Press Association.
Ami Eden, JTA’s editor in chief, won the Rockower Award for excellence in single commentary for the article “A gloomy decade later, Jews still fighting J2K virus.”
Ron Kampeas, JTA’s Washington bureau chief, took home the David Frank Award for Excellence in Personality Profiles with his obituary of William Safire, the former Nixon-era White House speechwriter and New York Times columnist.
Hadassah took home five first-place Rockowers in the magazine category and four second-place prizes. The Intermountain Jewish News, based in Denver, finished with four top prizes in the division for newspapers with circulation below 15,000 and two second-place finishes. The Forward won three first-place Rockowers in the large-circulation division, plus eight second-place awards – including a sweep in the editorial writing and comprehensive coverage categories.

The contest is named for Simon Rockower.
