To the Editor:
Israel’s plans to build 600 housing units in Pisgat Ze’ev in eastern Jerusalem over the objections of the United States is but another example of a smug disregard for the good counsel of a staunch ally. The United States well knows that for its own sake, Israel must honor Palestinian hopes of an independent state with its capital in East Jerusalem and take steps toward that goal.
Israel’s actions continue to destroy the credibility of its claims that it wants a true and lasting piece with the Palestinian people. If it is wise, it will pay attention to the constructive criticism of its allies, and discontinue policies and actions that thwart the resumption of a meaningful peace process. It is foolhardy to turn a deaf ear to someone who has your best interest at heart.
