JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli naval cadet was killed during a diving exercise.
Gal Azulay, 19, of Zichron Yaakov, died early Monday morning during a routine exercise at a naval base in Ashdod as part of the training course of an elite unit, according to the Israel Defense Forces.
Azulay’s partner realized that he was showing signs of distress and carried him to the water’s surface, according to the IDF. Many attempts were made to revive him.
Azulay was part of the Shayetet 13, the naval commando unit.
It is not known what caused Azulay’s death. All naval training exercises were suspended after the accident, Ha’aretz reported. A naval investigation was opened, according to the IDF.
