(JTA) — The University of California, Irvine has asked federal investigators to look into a complaint that a Muslim student group raised money for a terrorist organization.

The university on Wednesday forwarded a complaint filed by the Zionist Organization of America charging that the Muslim Student Union sent funds collected at a May 21 event to Viva Palestina, a group founded by British lawmaker George Galloway that sends supplies and equipment, as well as cash, to the terrorist organization Hamas in Gaza in defiance of Israel’s blockade.

The FBI forwarded the complaint to the Justice Department.

The campus has been the site of tension between Jewish and Muslim students over the Middle East situation. A complaint filed in 2004 by the ZOA charged that the university failed to respond to complaints of harassment by Muslim students against Jewish students. A federal civil rights investigation concluded that the complainants were not protected by the Title VI civil rights law.
