WASHINGTON (JTA) — Two Jewish environmental organizations are launching communitywide campaigns on environmental issues.

The Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life and Hazon are starting pledge drives focusing on the issues of energy and climate change. The goal is to encourage Jewish people and institutions to commit to actions, including adding environmental issues to the community’s legislative agenda, improving the sustainability of their buildings and working for a less carbon-based energy policy.

The campaigns also will call for Jewish institutions to create "green teams or sustainability committees aimed at starting the process of setting specific goals for lowering the carbon footprint of their institution and the whole community," according to a news release.

Hazon has established a new Web site to provide educational and other materials.
