WASHINGTON (JTA) — Pastor John Hagee wished President Obama success and urged him to keep his campaign promises on Israel.
The founder of Christians United for Israel notes in a Jan. 26 contribution to the Washington Post’s On Faith blog that he endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Obama’s rival in the presidential election.
Still, even though most evangelical Christians backed McCain, Hagee said he "fully supported" Obama.
He said he was encouraged by Obama’s pledge that Israel’s security is "sacrosanct" and "non-negotiable," and that an Iran with nuclear weapons would be "unacceptable."
"Among my prayers for our new president will be that he keeps these important campaign promises," Hagee said. "If he does, he will find great support and appreciation from me and the millions of evangelical Christians who share my passion for Israel."
