SAO PAULO, Brazil (JTA) — A group of Brazilian Jews rallied for Israel and for peace.
Some 3,000 people gathered Sunday at the Latin American Memorial in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city and home to half of the country’s 120,000-strong Jewish community, in a rally organized by Organized Jewish Youth.
Participants dressed in white waved Brazilian and Israeli flags.
"We seek the peaceful coexistence between peoples and religions, and we need them to accept us as Jews and Zionists," Persio Bider, the president of Organized Jewish Youth, told JTA. "Here we have the right to respectfully speak out for what we believe and support."
A small group of Christian supporters of Israel also attended the rally. No Muslim representatives were invited.
