SYDNEY, Australia (JTA) — A rabbi who led the Baltimore community for more than 50 years died in Australia.

Rabbi Mendel Feldman died Dec. 13 in a Sydney hospital after suffering a stroke last month. He was 88.

Feldman led the Shearith Israel Congregation in Baltimore, Md., and Khal Ahavas Tzemach Tzedek, which he founded and where he was given the title of emeritus rabbi upon his retirement.

Hundreds of Chabad rabbis from across Australia attended Feldman’s funeral Dec. 14 to pay tribute to the man who had served as the shaliach, or emissary, of the previous Lubavitcher rebbe, Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson.

Feldman immigrated to Australia in 2004 to join his son, Pinchus, who was sent to Sydney by Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson to be the spiritual leader of the Lubavitch movement in New South Wales.

Mourners gathered outside the Yeshiva Center, the local headquarters of Lubavitch in Bondi, as Feldman’s coffin passed by en route to the cemetery.
