The UJA Federation in Toronto has received nearly $10 million to build a new Holocaust center.
The gift, from Holocaust survivor Michael (Chaim) Neuberger, is the largest on record for the center.
Established in 1985, the center will be renamed the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre, and will be part of the Sherman Campus – a revamped community services hub now under construction and slated to open in 2011.
Neuberger’s entire immediate family – his parents, four brothers and one sister – were all killed in the Holocaust.
Officials say the center will accommodate thousands more than the 60,000 people, many of them students, who visit the current facility or attend its programs every year.
Plans call for interactive, high-tech exhibits, a multi-media learning center, anti-racism training programs, and a redeveloped museum.
“Educating people of all faiths about the Holocaust is so important to me,” remarked Neuberger. “We want to build this center so that all people, of all ages and all nationalities, will learn the truth, and learn from the lessons of the past.”
