Hundreds paraded through downtown Rome to celebrate Israel’s 60th birthday.
Sunday’s march kicked off at the symbol of the Jewish Diaspora – the ancient Roman Arch of Titus, whose carved decoration portrays the Menorah brought back after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 C.E.
Mayor Gianni Alemanno, Rome’s chief rabbi and other Jewish leaders addressed the crowd, who then snaked through the city center to the historic Jewish ghetto area.
Participants carried Israeli and Italian flags and posters reading “Israel Forever.”
The march was part of a “Walk the Land” initiative sponsored by Keren Kayemeth L’Israel.
