An Israeli, Eliahu Inbal, was named chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
Inbal, 72, who signed a three-year contract Monday to begin his new position in the fall of 2009, said he will seek a repertoire that balances modern Czech composers with other world talents.
Inbal is also the music director of the La Fenice Theatre in Venice, and in April he will become the chief conductor of the Metropolitan Orchestra of Tokyo until 2010.
