Israel and the Palestinian Authority have failed to agree on a joint statement in advance of next week’s peace summit.
P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas told the Arab League in Cairo on Friday that the two sides had failed to reach a joint statement to present at next week’s U.S.-led summit, which will start Nov. 26 in Washington and move to Annapolis, Md., the following day.
Abbas blamed the failure on Israel.
“We wanted through our negotiations to reach a joint document, but unfortunately we could not agree on the wording because each side has its own point of view,” Abbas said.
The two sides remain divided over both substance and tone — and even what the statement should be called.
The Palestinian and Israeli negotiating teams will next meet in Washington to try to reach accord on a statement.
