An international report found that Israelis rank low in willingness to donate organs.

A study conducted in 50 industrialized countries by the European Union and World Health Organization found that Israel suffers from a dearth of organ donations.

According to the report, which was quoted in Yediot Achronot, 54 percent of Israelis said they would decline to donate the organs of a deceased relative, the third highest refusal from among the countries polled.

There are 9.7 organ donors for every million Israelis, a rate placing the Jewish state 33rd among the 50 countries.

Experts say religious objections often foil attempts to encourage organ donations in Israel.

The Knesset Health Committee on Monday approved legislation that would provide cash compensation or other perks to live organ donors.
