A Holocaust film starring Nicole Kidman will not be shot at a former German concentration camp, its trustees said.
Curators of the Holocaust memorial at the site of Sachsenhausen camp said over the weekend that they had been approached by the producers of “The Reader” about filming on location, but turned down the request.
“Former concentration camps are cemeteries,” said Horst Seferens, a memorial spokesman. “It’s just not appropriate to use them as movie sets.”
“The Reader” is based on a novel of the same name and involves a man who discovers the woman he loves is a former Nazi camp guard. The film, which is slated for release in 2010, will star Kidman and British actor Ralph Fiennes.
A spokewoman for the production confirmed a query had been made about filming at Sachsenhausen, which is located north of Berlin, but that alternative locations were found.
