A U.S. House of Representatives committee congratulated Israel on chairing a U.N. committee for the first time.
The non-binding resolution passed unanimously Wednesday by the House Foreign Affairs committee congratulates “Mr. Ron Adam, Israel’s Chair of the United Nations Committee on Program and Coordination, and the Government and people of the State of Israel on Israel’s first ever appointment to chair a United Nations committee” and notes Israel’s long struggle for full acceptance at the United Nations.
It also backs Israel’s efforts to join the Security Council, the U.N.’s only body with powers of legal enforcement, by 2019. The resolution will now be considered by the full House.
The committee Adam chairs approves work plans for the United Nations and its bodies.
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), the chairman of the congressional Helsinki Commission, a body that monitors human rights overseas, initiated the resolution.
