A 75,000-signature petition calling for Iran to stop its nuclear program was unveiled at a press conference in the U.S. Capitol building.
Thursday’s conference was sponsored by The Israel Project and featured U.S. Representatives Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) Jon Porter (R-Nev.), Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) and TIP Founder and President Jennifer Laszlo.
U.S. Presidential hopefuls U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards (D), former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) all released statements about the importance of stopping terrorism and Iran’s nuclear program.
The petition calls on the U.N. secretary general to put economic pressure and sanctions on Iran to end its nuclear program. The petition will be delivered to companies that do business with or in Iran, every U.S. state treasurer and governor, every member of the House and Senate, every ambassador to the U.S. and the U.N. and major religious leaders.
“U.S. policy must be clear, unequivocal and effective. We cannot permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons,” said Clinton in her statement.
