Iran’s president reportedly pledged to continue support for Hamas.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshal during a one-day visit to Damascus this week. The Washington Post quoted a “senior Hamas spokesman” as saying that the Iranian president pledged support for the group in the wake of its recent isolation.
Hamas forces ousted forces loyal to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas last month, prompting Abbas to fir the Hamas led Cabinet and name a new West Bank-based government. The development has increased Hamas’ isolation.
Ahmadinejad also met with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah while in Damascus. Hezbollah launched last year’s war against Israel with Iranian and Syrian backing.
