U.N. naval peacekeepers patrolling Lebanon’s coast complained of several close encounters with Israel’s armed forces. Germany said over the weekend that a U.N. naval vessel under its command had recently been buzzed by Israeli warplanes while two others had been approached by Israeli gunboats. The incidents, which took place near Lebanon’s waters with Israel, were allegedly in violation of rules of engagement established as part of the boosting of the U.N. peacekeeper force after last year’s war between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas. Israeli military officials said the complaints were under investigation.
